Capturing Creativity: Photographing Artists at Music Festivals
Standing in the photo pit, photographing, brought me such immense joy. When I was growing up, I can remember hearing this hit single. It’s one of those songs you listen to growing up, always thinking there’s going to be this immeasurable distance between you and the artist. When I get to photograph these incredibly talented performers, it continually blows my mind.
I want to take a moment to share with you what happens when you photograph the artists and what some of my favourite parts of it are.
You will often times be waiting in the media tent for the coordinator to come in and guide you to your designated spot. You don’t always know what the set is going to look like, how high the stage is or what colours will be used - you have to be on your toes!
There’s usually a sweet spot before going in where you can meet other photographers and creatives. This is one of my favourite parts of it all.
When you photograph the artists, you will often have approximately 10 minutes in either the photo pit or perhaps half a stadium of distance between you and the artist. You are in a balancing act with sometimes 10 or so other photographers all trying to get that picture in those first three songs.
Then you all scurry to your photos to send them off and get to continue to meet really epic people.
